Saturday began early for I was anxious to see everyone and wanted to get an early start. Kelly and I had gone to bed around midnight and I was up at 6:40 AM. I showered and then headed downstairs to sit on the couch and read until everyone else woke up. Kelly was up early too, and so we waited for vickyandnorm (Norm and Vicky) and kruppenheimer (Lisa) to awaken and get ready. It didn't take too long but it seemed as though it took forever. However, we were ready to go by 9 AM, which is what I was hoping for, and at that point, we hit the road.

Yesterday, while the girls went to their fancy spa to get their fancy facials and whatever else people get in spas, the boy went scuba-diving.

Mom arranged it with a friend of hers who teaches scuba diving. Doug, stubiebrother and I headed to Thousand Oaks to the Sports Chalet, where at about 10 AM, we signed our lives away and proceeded to learn how to scuba dive in the 13 foot-deep pool that they had on site. The pool was kept very warm so that we didn't need wet suits.

We learned how to wear the gear. We learned how to clear out our masks. We learned how to breath through the regulator. We learned to different ways for clearing the regulator while underwater. We even learned how to recover the regulator underwater if we lost it. We learned some basic hand signals as well. Once we'd done a few practice runs, we headed for the deep end. We spent a total of about 40 minutes underwater, and might have spent a little longer if Doug hadn't come close to running out of air. (When we finally surfaced, me and Jason's tanks were at about the 1,000 PSI mark. Doug's was almost at 0 PSI.)

It was an interesting experience. For the first few minutes, I found myself much more conscious of my breathing than normal. I made sure to practice removing the regulator from my mouth, clearing it, and getting it back in. It was easy. We tossed around underwater frisbees. We swam through hoops. We laid down on the bottom of the pool (making sure to equalize the pressure in our ears). It was a lot of fun.

After it was all over, Doug, Jason and I headed to a nearby T.G.I. Friday's for lunch.

We spent the afternoon hanging around the house. Then, in the evening, we headed to Wood Ranch grill for dinner. Almost everyone had tri-tip and it was excellent! We celebrated Ruby's birthday after dinner, with a birthday cake from Coldstone, and a bunch of presents (Ruby turns 4 on December 1). By the time that was over, I was exhausted. Mom, Jen and Jason put on a movie but I was out cold. When I next woke up, the lights were out and everyone had done to sleep.

I head back home tonight. My flight departs LAX at 10:20 PM. I've used some more upgrade credits to upgrade to first class. The airplane is a 767 on the flight home so First Class may be a little bit nicer than on a 757. There are fires in Malibu, so we'll probably have to take the freeways to LAX this evening, and miss the pretty ride along the coast. I get into Dulles at 6 AM, and if everything goes well, I hope to be home (and in bed for a little while) at 7 AM.

We had a great Thanksgiving dinner last night. First, we had everyone over at Mom and Dad's: me, he110_sunshine, stubiebrother, Doug, Rachel, Ruby and Carson. This year was a non-traditional year for dinner. We had excellent crab legs, delicious prime rib, rice, and broccoli. There was plenty of food and it was all delicious. Doug and Rachel made dessert. We sipped drinks after dinner, it was a lot of fun.

I was exhausted soon after dinner, but we stayed up so that Mom, Jen and Jason could watch Gray's Anatomy. Jen, Jason and I slept on air mattresses down in the living room. Lights were out by 10:30 PM and I slept really well.

We were up at around 7:30 this morning. I was hungry as soon as I woke up. Mom made me chocolate chip pancakes. I ate 6 of them and they hit the spot. Doug, Jason and I head off to our Scuba lesson in about half an hour. Meanwhile, Jen and Rachel are going to their spa treatments soon. I think they are going shopping later. Today is black Friday. But if you ask me, you've got to be crazy to go shopping today.

I was up at 3 AM because I couldn't sleep. My alarm was set for 4 AM, but there I was, awake at 3 AM and so I watched and episode of The West Wing before heading into the shower.

The car was there at 4:30 AM to pick me up and we headed off for Dulles airport. The roads were empty and I was at the airport at 5:15 AM. The airport was empty as well. It took only 10 minutes to go from the curb to the gate, and for those of you who know Dulles, that includes the short ride in the mobile lounge to the C-gates.

Turns out the Red Carpet Club at Dulles doesn't open until 6 AM, so I sat around until it opened and then spent about 25 minutes there. I had a light breakfast and then left to board the plane. I boarded at 6:30 and not 5 minutes later, we had to debark the plane because of an issue with the navigational equipment. We were told there would be a 40 minute delay, but 10 minutes later, we were boarded again, and this time, without incident. The flight left 10 minutes late, at 7:10 AM.

The flight itself wasn't too bad. I upgraded to first class. I spent some time talking to the person sitting next to me (who was quite talkative). She was from Hawaii and she was returning home. I managed to get a little sleep, too, but not much. I also added about 800 words to Graveyard Shift, not as much as I had hope to get done on the plane, but better than nothing. My word count now stands at 18,155 words.

I arrived in L.A. at 9:50 AM. Doug and Rachel were waiting for me when I got there. I hopped in the minivan and we headed to Oxnard. It took us a little over an hour.

Since then, we've been sitting around, waiting for he11o_sunshine and stubiebrother to get here. Mom was here when we got here, and so was Ruby and Carson. Carson is so cute--he is to Doug what "Mini-me" is to Doctor Evil. Even their facial expressions are an identical match!

Mom and Dad have had a lot of work done on their house. It's been painted, there's new carpeting, and new base-boards. It looks great.

My text-messaging seems to be delayed. Kelly wasn't getting my text messages and sometime around 1 PM, she called me. This is significant because up to this point, we'd never talked to each other on the phone. It became a kind of game between us--a streak if you will. And so when I saw her calling, my first words when I answered the phone were, "You broke the streak!"

Ever other year, we have a "non-traditional" Thanksgiving dining, and this is one of those years. We're having crab legs and prime rib for dinner.

Today is Doug and Rachel's 6th wedding anniversary.

Almost 11:30 PM and just home from the Happy Hour after our last softball game of the regular season. We lost. Badly. So badly it was hard to take seriously. We finished with a record of 7-2 which places us 3rd in our division and guarantees us a place in the playoffs on September 8th. After the game we went to an English pub on 13th and Penn and I did my fair share of drinking to celebrate our season.

I had 6-1/2 hours of meetings today. One meeting was 4 hours long! In fact, I had to leave that meeting for an hour and go to another meeting, then come back. I spent the entire morning preparing for the second meeting, and the last meeting of the day, a short half hour number, was postponed until later in the week. Not even time for lunch today. Let's just say it has been a Long-Ass Day.

Spoke to Doug tonight and he sounded good. I even got to speak briefly to Ruby, who said, in a cheering, voluble voice, "Hi, Uncle Jamie!" How can you resist something like that! I had a message from he11o_sunshine, who I think is back from her trip to L.A. I called her back, but got her voicemail, so I'll try talking to her tomorrow.

When I got home from work, I had a package from Powell's Books awaiting me. Two books that I look forward to reading: Robert's Rules of Writing, which I am exciting to read in conjunction with mabfan's series of blog essays called "Robert's Rules". I also got Damon Knight's classic book, Creating Short Fiction, which I am equally eager to read.

But for now, it's into the shower, and then off to bed, to start all over again 6 hours from now.

Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

I was thinking that this is my first trip to Europe and that I can remember, when I was younger, wondering when I would end up getting there. So I decided to look back through my diaries and see what I was doing 10 years ago today, July 2, 1997. I don't think Europe was on my mind at all back then:

Today was another day that I felt somewhat overwhelmed. I have a lot to do today but couldn't really focus on any one things.

Doug called me at work today and he is doing pretty well. He is the first person in the history of the Debois County Dragons to be ejected from a game--for arguing a call^*. But he was in good humor and it was good to hear from him.

I made my lunch again tonight which means a full week (though this is a short week) of packing my lunch. That's not bad, and it helps save money.

June 4th means that it's Doug's birthday today. I'm sure that Ruby and Carson are wishing their Dad a happy birthday this morning. I just wanted to add mine:

Yesterday was a long day and today felt even longer. You already know that yesterday (Sunday) started at about 6 AM for me, when I headed to the gym for a light workout (arms and shoulders). Well, eventually, Jen and Jason got up and we all scrambled off to First Breakfast. I had a massive waffle with a hunk of whipped cream the size of a softball on it. After breakfast, we went back to the room, but with Doug still sound asleep, we figured we needed to be elsewhere.

We packed a lot into a very short weekend trip, but Mom was surprised and it was a lot of fun. We'll all be back together (plus three) in a month to spend 7 times as much time together on the cruise through Italy and the Greek Islands.

Saturday was a long day! I was up at 5 AM because I couldn't sleep any longer. I packed up the remainder of my stuff and headed off to LAX to catch my plane to Las Vegas. There were no lines. I checked in at the Premier check-in counter, went through the premium security "line" (there was no one in line) and was at my gate 10 minutes after arriving at the airport.

I had some time to kill so I watched the season finale of Heroes which I hadn't seen yet, and which I thought was terrific! I made sure I was the first person on the plane because I didn't want to run into Mom and Dad, who were taking a flight about 2 hours after mine. Mom was still in the dark about the big surprise in Vegas. She thought I was flying home today.

The flight was short and uneventful. So short, in fact, that I couldn't complete the crossword puzzle in the magazine. When I got to the gate, I found that he11o_sunshine and jkashlock's flight was getting in early, so I walked over to their gate to meet them. We then headed to baggage claim so I could get my bag. We were also able to check into the hotel. All that was left was to wait for Doug.

His flight got in early but we couldn't find him and he wasn't answering his phone. Finally, at close to 11 AM, Jen spotted him wandering around upstairs. We found out that his phone was broken and he had been wandering around looking for us. We caught a taxi to the hotel, checked in, and then headed to another hotel for lunch so that we didn't run into Mom and Dad prematurely.

Finally, around 2 PM or so, Dad called and told us to meet him at the Bally's sports book. We walked over there (in the near 100 degree sun) and met him. He led us to where mom was sitting at video poker. He told her he had a surprise for her, while we all hung back. She closed her eyes as instructed and we all stood around her. Then she opened her eyes. From her reaction, I think she was pretty surprised!

Lots of activities the rest of the day. We had drinks at a bar in the Bellagio. Then we decided to go to the pool, which we did. I would be remiss to mention the fact that at one point, I was spirited away by a bunch of bachelorettes, as a part of a bachelorette party, which Doug and Jason would have no part in. I didn't mind. After, I went back to the hotel room to rest for a little while. At 6:30, we headed to Emeril's for dinner. More drinks. And excellent food. Doug and I shared some tuna steak tartare for an appetizer and I had--you guessed it--the copper river salmon for the main course.

After dinner people wanted to go gamble but I was beat. I headed back up to the room and went to sleep. I don't even remember Jen and Jason getting back. But I did hear Doug come in just before 3 AM. He had lots of beads and he said he'd lost $100 all told. It was a fun day.

I'm done with work for the day, but hanging around until happy hour, which will begin around 5:30, so I have some time to kill.

I talked to Doug on the phone earlier today and it was good to hear from him. He sounded like he was as ready to get out of the office for the week as I am, although I have to say this week went by surprisingly fast.

Ah, the weekend! What to do? Reading, certainly. Spring cleaning, too. I still have the guest room closet to finish cleaning out. The kitchen floor could use some mopping, and I need to clean the bathroom. The entire house could use a good vacuuming. And the yard is starting to look like it could use some work too. I'd like to, perhaps, squeeze in a little bit of writing this weekend if I can. And there's the Italian lessons. But I don't want to overdo it. I need some time to just relax.

Baseball season starts up next week and I'm looking forward to that, although I've opted out of ordering the MLB package this year. If I ordered it, I'd just stay up late watching Yankee games and I have to get to bed at a decent hour, old man that I've become. Besides, I'm looking for some ways to cut back on my spending and the two hundred dollars or so that I save by forgoing the games is a step in that direction.

As part of the spring cleaning, I'm thinking about reorganizing my LJ tags, which have proliferated wildly out of control. To do this efficiently, I'd need to wrote a little PHP program, but I already have the PHP-LJ library so it's just a matter of writing code and remapping tags. I haven't decided yet.

My diary reminded me that today would have been my Grandma's 85th birthday. It's been nearly ten years since she died. I'm not the only one who forgets from time-to-time. It happened to Grandpa too. Probably more than once. But the last time on record was January 17, 1997:

I called Grandma to wish her a happy birthday. Grandpa answered the phone and said, "Oh she's not home for another half our or so." Then he paused and said, "Oh boy! Is today the 17th? I've got to go and--uh oh--get her something!" Needless to say, I spoke to Grandma later and wished her a happy birthday.

(In that same diary entry, I mentioned the fact that Doug came over along with his new 1997 green Nissan truck. He also had his tongue pierced only a month earlier. Just wait until Ruby and Carson are old enough to read that.)

I have decided to build a house, and I have Doug and Rachel (and Ruby and Carson) to thank for it. Doug, who works in the home loan industry has made this incredibly easy for me, supplying me with everything I need to get the job done, with absolutely no paperwork.

I am hoping that construction will be completed before the big trip this summer. Of course, I will post pictures of the on-going progress of the house through it's various stages. Stay-tuned.

Today is my free day--no workouts and I can eat whatever I want. I slept in until 9 AM, which is late for me and then I had a quick breakfast and headed out to the grocery store to do some shopping. Since then, I have been working on the book collection and reading database applications and have made good progress in converting the old formats to the new data model. I should be able to start writing actual code soon.

I've been listening to Pink Floyd all day. So far I've listened to Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle, Obscured by Clouds, and Dark Side of the Moon. I'm now in the middle of listening to a live version of the Dark Side of the Moon album.

I talked to Doug earlier today. Their power has been restored and they should be able to go home today. (They live in Seattle and were affected by some of the storms there.) I also talked to jen_ashlock briefly. She and jkashlock are in San Diego this weekend and take the red-eye home tonight.

I'm off to treat myself to something good to eat.

Doug had to work most of the day yesterday and he finally got home around 5 PM. Shortly after he got home, he, Mom, Dad and I headed out to the Keg to have some drinks and sit around chatting, while Rachel, Ruby and Carson got a break from our hijinks. We then headed over to the restaurant around 7:30 PM. We had to take two cars and we dropped Carson off at Theresa's house on the way. Doug was playing Richard Cheese in the car and Dad was in the back seat and Doug managed to leave the car at the worst parts of "Baby Got Back" and "Badd", leaving me to fend for myself.

Daniel's in Bellevue is on the 21st floor of a hotel and when we were seated, we had a pretty nice view of downtown Seattle in the distance. The food was really good. I had a 13 ounce fillet mignon with a peppercorn brandy sauce, and a baked potato. I had some clam chowder, too. Ruby was with us and was very well-behaved. She had a hamburger and fries, and some root beer, all of which are among her favorites.

It was a very nice dinner and a very nice evening, and we were all wiped out by the time we got home last night. Now it's 8:30 AM (PST) and I' already hungry again! My flight leaves Seattle at 5 PM this afternoon.

I was up at 6 AM this morning after falling asleep almost instantly last night, and sleeping soundly through the night. Doug had to go into work this morning and he left around 6:30 AM. People finally started getting up around 7:30 AM. We had some bagels for breakfast and spent most of the morning just lazing around.

I upgraded my return flights home tomorrow night. I am wait-listed on the flight from Seattle to San Francisco, even though it looks as though there are plenty of first class seats. I am confirmed in first class on the flight from San Francisco to Baltimore. I have a 4 hour layover in San Francisco, and I plan on having a good dinner somewhere in the airport there to kill some of the time. (You know what would be a good idea: movie theaters in airports. I could go and see the new James Bond movie or something to kill the time while I am waiting for my flight.)

Doug is going to try and get off work at 2 PM. Mom and Rachel just went out to get some lunch for us. We are having dinner tonight at about 8 PM at Daniel's Broiler in Seattle. I am very much looking forward to that meal. For some reason, I've felt hungry day.

Mom wants to go shopping and Rachel may want to go too, but I've been trying to convince them not to. It would be insane to be at a mall today. You're liable to end up crying.

We had a great Thanksgiving dinner yesterday, courtesy of Doug and Rachel. Rachel's sister Theresa and her son Alex were over to have dinner with us as well. We had a turkey, some delicious mashed potatoes, gravy, salad, macaroni and cheese, stuffing, new potatoes and onions. It was all delicious. After dinner, we had a birthday celebration for Ruby, who will turn 3 years old on December 1. We had pumpkin pie and birthday cake, and Ruby got to open some presents.

We also had an iChat video chat with jen_ashlock and jkashlock since they were in New York and couldn't be here for Thanksgiving.

I am both stuffed and exhausted. I was ready to go to bed at 7 PM (after having gotten up at 1 AM PST this morning)! But it looks like I'll be off to bed in the next hour or so.

My flight got into Seattle on time, and since I arrived at Doug and Rachel's, about 4 hours ago, we've been hanging out, and talking while preparing Thanksgiving dinner. I finally got to meet Carson in person and he looks just like Doug did when he was 8 months old. It's uncanny! Looks like we'll be having our dinner around 4:30 or 5 PM. Then there is a video conference with jen_ashlock and jkashlock later on this evening.

I left the office half an hour later than usual and had to stop at the grocery store on the way home to pick up a few things. I was trying to figure out what to do tonight (Wednesday evening is the one week night evening where there is nothing good on TV). I arrived home to find that today was a good mail day.

First, my autographed copy of Visions arrived, personally signed by strausmouse right beneath the article he wrote on his recent skydiving experience. Believe it or not, I have a small collection on my bookshelves, of items signed by my friends. I have a Master's thesis signed by Tawnya. I have a signed copy of Healthy Pet magazine, which Lisa edits. I have a signed copy of an article in the San Luis Obispo Tribune featuring Dan. I have a signed copy from an Oxnard newspaper mentioned Grandpa. I have a signed copy of an article from the UCLA Law Review, "On Regulating the Internet: Usenet, A Case Study" by Paul. I have a guest editorial in the Rockland County Journal written by none other than Doug many years ago. (That one, alas, is not signed. I'll have to bring it to Seattle with me next time I go.) And now, I can add Eric's article to my collection. I swear, the day I finally publish something, I'm going to sign 50 copies of it, personalize each one of them ("To Jamie, a really swell guy!") and stuff my shelves with them!

Second, I received a letter from Trevor and Andrea (aka, thepopeswife). Actually, it was two-and-a-half letters, as Trevor wrote one letter, Andrea wrote another letter, and then she included an addendum to tell me that she agrees with my spelling thoughts! And so our mutual snail-mail, letter-writing pen-palism continues.

I now know what I am going to do tonight. I am going to compose a letter back to Trevor and Andrea. I may even autograph it for them so that they can start a collection on their bookshelf (if Trevor clears away some of the Lord of the Rings DVDs to make some room). Those autographs will be worth something, someday!

The Yankees just lost to Detroit and they are not down 2-1. I feel as thought I should care more, but after 2 Jaeger shots and a tequila shot (not to mention a couple of beers), I really don't care at the moment. We watched most of the game at Molly's, a bar nearby where Jen and Jason live.

jen_ashlock has had less to drink than both Jason and I (and Doug, who is drinking with us remotely) but she seems to be three sheets to the wind. In fact, she has disappeared, and I assume she has gone to bed.

It's about time that I did the same.
